Australian passport holders get a 60-day visa exemption on arrival at no cost. You must complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card online within three days before you arrive.

How to get sorted, step by step
- Check your passport has 6 months validity from arrival.
- Book proof of onward travel out of Thailand within 60 days.
- Complete the free TDAC at tdac.immigration.go.th within 3 days before you fly, and save the QR code.
- Get an International Driving Permit in Australia if you plan to drive or ride a scooter.
- Take out insurance that explicitly covers motorcycle riding if that's on the plan.
What catches Australians out
Riding a scooter without a motorcycle-endorsed licence and an IDP is illegal and voids most Australian travel insurance policies.
Vaping is illegal in Thailand — e-cigarettes are banned outright and can be confiscated with a fine at the airport.
Drug penalties are severe. Cannabis rules have tightened again since 2024 — assume it is not legal for recreational use.
Overstaying costs THB 500 per day and can result in a ban.
Health cover for Australians in Thailand
No reciprocal agreement. Private hospitals in Bangkok and Phuket are excellent but expect payment upfront or a direct guarantee from your insurer.
Vaccinations: Hepatitis A and typhoid commonly recommended. Rabies is present. Japanese encephalitis for long rural stays.
Medications: Some medications, including certain codeine and ADHD drugs, are controlled. Carry a doctor's letter and original packaging.
