How to get sorted, step by step

- Complete the New Zealand Traveller Declaration online or in the app within 24 hours of departure.
- Declare all food, plant and animal products — New Zealand biosecurity fines start at NZD $400 on the spot.
What catches Australians out
Australian permanent residents (not citizens) must hold an NZeTA and pay the IVL before boarding — airlines will deny boarding without it.
Biosecurity is genuinely strict. Undeclared fruit, honey, seeds or hiking boots with soil on them will earn an instant fine.
Bringing a dog or cat requires months of lead time and MPI approval.

Australia has a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement with New Zealand covering immediately necessary treatment in public hospitals. It does not cover ambulances, medical evacuation, or getting you home — you still need travel insurance.
